Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics receives €4m from BMBF

26 April 2024

Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) will receive €4m from a new programme for the implementation of the first approved magnetic fusion project.

The grant will support two IPP initiatives. In the first, IPP will work with Proxima Fusion on fundamental questions relating to the concept of a stellarator power plant: the optimisation of the magnetic cage, the controlled dissipation of heat and the development of a remote maintenance concept. Proxima Fusion is receiving almost €6m in additional funding from the BMBF.

In the second, IPP is to be a project partner to the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) which is cooperating with Gauss Fusion to develop dismantlable, superconducting coils to facilitate the maintenance of a future fusion power plant. Gauss Fusion is receiving €9m in additional funding from the BMBF.
